Junior Barn Volunteers J-staff – Barn Crew

The J- Staff – Barn Crew is a progression program that will help our young Barn Crew excel as youth leaders. The organization of the stepping stones that youth will walk as they progress in their skills and leadership development are measurable and consistent. They will work with Christian mentors, and receive feedback and coaching along the way. Aspiring Barn Crew -J-Staff, will develop goals they can look forward to working towards each year.

During the summer programs Barn Crew- J-Staff assist in the daily barn work, ground and riding lessons and trail rides. Some local Barn Crew members may be asked to assist year round in the barn. We are commitment to the national best standards and practices for youth leadership and horse programs. In keeping with this, The Junior Staff program consists of 3 steps:

First – youth who are 14-15 years old, who have an eye toward joining the J-Staff should should have a servant’s heart and be actively exploring their faith journey. They should plan to enroll in the Leaders in Training summer camp session held each summer. During this summer camp session, they will set goals, develop leadership skills and have opportunities to work on those skills and goals.
Those interested in Barn Crew Ministry Team should have completed or be well on their way to completing their Natural and CHA level 2 Horsemanship skills – learned through the progressive beginner to advanced horse camp sessions offered each summer at Wesley Woods.
They can work develop those skills by progressing through the Levels program offered in Beginner to Advanced Horse Camps, lessons or weekend programs offered at Wesley woods. While practicing advanced level skills, developing riders will learn to set goals and create plans to achieve them through self-assessment, checklists and session planning. Interested Participants nearing completion of their level 2 skills will discuss leadership opportunities with staff.

Second – All J-Staff, including the Barn Crew ministry team members

  • need to be 16 years old.
  • They will need to apply
  • submit references
  • complete an interview for the program.

Third –once accepted to the program they will need to have completed their Natural and CHA level 2 skills or be close to completing level 2. They will also need to attend J- staff training – which is usually held over 2 weekends in the spring each year.

J-Staff ministry teams are a lot of work – and a whole lot of fun! If you have questions about the J-Staff program or Barn Crew -ministry team please contact Horses@WesleyWoodsIowa.org
